A good escape room shouldn't require external knowledge. I tried to solve it, and I immediately thought about using a Ceaser Cipher. I tried several shifts forwards and backwards. No matter what I tried, the first word didn't make sense. Even if there was a German dictionary in the room, I would have tried every shift only to find out that none of them make sense. If I figured out it might have something to do with the dictionary, I would have looked up the first word in every shift, eventually finding out that "gelb" means "yellow." Finally, I would figure out the message and find the code.

All of this assumes you know what a Ceaser Cipher is. Not everyone does, and a lot of people who do would probably not think about it right away.
