I agree, Judo is the most practical art for self-defence.

What I like about judo is you can remain standing, allowing you to make an exit. You don’t want to end up on the ground if you can avoid it because a second person could come and kick you while you’re on the ground.

The thing with Sambo is that most of the throws are also from Judo, and many top level Sambists happen to be black belt Judokas. Some say Sambo is like 60-70% judo, and 30-40% east European/central asian wrestling.

The "problem" I see with wrestling is that (in the US atleast) after college there really aren't any avenues to learn it on it's own. At best it's incorporated into the curriculum of a BJJ school or a MMA GYM.

1. wrestling (stand up skills, explosiveness and train to land on top, thats all you need really, subs are a plus)
2. jiu jitsu (the full thing, with takedowns)
3. judo (people train themselves to land on their head not to give up the ippon and give their back and wait for the ref to stand it up if they fall in a bad position, those are terrible habits. Also they dont train to land in a good position, its common for the one scoring an ippon to end up rolling over and ending on bottom)

btw I do BJJ (mostly nogi)

I would say wrestling because its judo regardless of clothes… and sometimes people only wear t-shirts. And it’s not like clothes negate the human body. Wrestling still works

I think wrestling is better for short term self-defence, but judo is better long term, I also believe judo is basically the best hybrid of both wrestling and jiu-jitsu. Sambo might be the best overall but is harder to find

I agree. Plus, Judo teaches more control on the opponent fall and submission. Outside life or death situations, excess in defence might just turn an ego battle into a catastrophe. So, I would deem Judo the best.

I totally agree. It doesn't pay to be locked up with someone for too long in a street situation, and both BJJ and wrestling are guilty of that. Especially BJJ. Judo has a better chance of incapacitating someone quickly and effectively on pavement, and you can still practice no-gi every other week or every other day. It's extremely versatile and even has sufficient ground game. If you train old-school Judo, then you get leg takedowns too, so it's a pretty safe bet when you're talking about self defense.

I've trained Judo for 15 years and would put Sambo at the top.

Wrestling + judo are better than bjj, in my opinion. Judo stands with some boxing or muaythai.

No, it's DEFINITELY wrestling.
1) it's FULL no go, it means that it actually works 100% on the street where people don't wear kimono LOL (because we don't live in ancient japan, we need grips that works in our modern reality)
2) it's have leg grips which most important . leg passes is VERY important on the street self defense scenario
3) every throw that exists in other martial arts and grappling arts included . when I said every I mean EVERY
4) teaching submissions for good wrestler is a deal of couple of weeks, not even months
I highly recommend these 3 styles :
freestyle wrestling, sports sambo (half gi) and greco wrestling (in russia it's called "classic wrestling" or french wrestling because this wrestling style doesn't have anything from ancient greek's wrestling )

Ive used judo in self defence. I had a buddy of mine use tai otoshi on someone just using there tshirt. My club also has quite a few coppers train judo who have used it a fair bit. I actually stated in bjj but we never did takedowns so i switched. We also have a few bjj guys train at are dojo to improve there takedown skills. I always found with judo unlike bjj and wrestling Im putting someone on the ground instead of taking someone to the ground, ie going there with them.

All are good 👍

Bjj is the best for 1v1
And wrestling/judo for 1v2+

My opinion on what the best martial art is for the average Joe has nothing to do with techniques. I think the best martial art for grappling is the one that gives you the most matt time and fits your schedule. So for me BJJ is always going to be number one.

There is a reason judo is the martial art practiced by most police forces in the world.

Yes but in judo they don't have grab legs

Traditional judo was very good with grab legs but I don't like the new judo with all new rules 😢
