As a Hungarian I have to say that, not other pianists on the Earth who are able to play Liszt rhapsodies better than Hungarian ones. I've heard many pianists to play this, but most of them just about the technique (and speed), and some of them literally bleed out on this piece.

These rhapsodies about the 18th and 19th centuries Hungarian history and folk (revolutions, Rákózci era, Hungarian knights ... etc), about the hard and bitter past ... most of the Hungarian kids growing up whilst learning history of these and hearing these stories alongside with these rhapsodies (in movies, in tales and so on) .... this is what is missing from foreign pianists despite of that some of them hell ish good.

Without knowing who is the pianist, if I hear a Liszt rhapsody immediately I can clearly hear the differences and quite easy to determine who is a Hungarian and who is not a Hungarian pianist.

I've never heard better played version than this one. When I'm listening this masterful piece played by Cziffra I forget the technique and I'm simply flying back in the Hungarian past - and that why he was a genius, he could touch the same keys so differently.

But of course, everything is matter of taste. :-)
