How is this man so humble, he is literally a legend in computing.

Another big *thanks* to Brian W Kernighan from a long-time C/Unix user.

Thank you Brian for doing this lovely set of interviews while you're on holiday, and thank you Computerphile - great stuff!

A legend. I’ve been studying and working in comp sci for 30+ years and could listen to the Prof speak for hours. Humble and an amazing thinker.

How long is he in England for? A friend gave me a copy of The C programming language signed by Dennis Ritchie, just before my friend and Dennis died, I would give just about anything to get Brian to sign it to.

The love this. I hope to see more Q&As, especially one with Mike Pound.

I look up to very few people but Brian Kernighan is definitely one of them. The C Programming Language is one of a handful of books that I keep in paper form, I can't through it away like I did with most of my books, it kind of has sentimental value(!) .

Thank you Mr Kerninghan.

"And that might explain a whole lot of things."
Haha. Unexpected.

A curious observation: by searching for Brailsford in the Old Bailey website you actually found 1 of the 32 death sentences listed in that website (out of 200k+ entries)

I would love it if the talks he gave to non-technical people were posted somewhere. I like to consider myself technical but that's really only in relation to non-technical people around me. In CS I'm still at ground level, maybe halfway up the stairs to the first floor.

Glad I get to see all three parts now, but I'll be sad when this part is published and I realise I've already seen it!

The question I wish I thought of is whether Brian Kerrighan had ever tried SQLite?
SQL was developed at IBM San Jose, but the SQLite implementation was implemented D. Richard Hipp in the spirit of Bell Labs
as a small command line tool. The idea of a small command line version of SQL seems improbable, but I think D. Richard Hipp did an amazing job,
that I think is a loving tribute to the Bell Labs toolmaking.

0:15 I bet she was asking about human linguistics, not computer linguistics.

This has been a very enjoyable 3 part video serie.
Only problem - Now I want more of this stuff.

Nice interview series! A special on awk with Brian Kernighan would be awesome!

Really interesting interview. And a big thank you to Professor Kernighan for making my working life easier (awk)!

Important: We use tabs for indentations and spaces for alignments. We can use both (well, maybe not in python). This way, changing the tab width will change the indentations according to our liking but will not misalign the aligned properties.

Awesome Q&A! If I could say anything to Brian it would be a big thank you.

4:09 Python enforces indentation, too. But it allows you to use either tabs or spaces, just so long as you are consistent. Forcing you to use only tabs is a step backwards, in my view.
