I do agree that Artstation is a great place to showcase your portfolio. While some of my lecturers do agree with it as well, one argument that they present is that when an employer is looking through your portfolio on Artstation, they can also see other people's work on recommended sections, which can potentially lead them on to hiring that person that was recommended through my work. While having a personal website does not present that "threat", since it is all my own personal work with no recommendations on similar works.

ArtStation is amazing.
My biggest question is: should I use real name or pen/user name?

At art school we were told to have our own site to showcase the type of art we actually want to make and upload way more content for people who actually want to check our your work as well as having 5 really outstanding pieces on art station and sketch fab.

I just finished yesterday my page in adobe portfolio, I don't know whether to laugh or cry ... now I will give more time to my artstation :P

Another big point is web indexing: it's very difficult to get your website to pop up on google search.
With ArtStation instead anyone googling your name can get to your portfolio in the first top 3/4 google results.
(Same goes for Behance if you're more on the design side of things)

Great video. Only reason I can think of having a personal website is to show some work which might not be your best or is just different. Typography and other design fields don't really have a place on Artstation which is geared much more towards game art, 3D work, and illustrations.

I was told at art school to avoid all video reels and just stick with still shots because video files take too long to load and save and share and studios hiring only spend a few seconds looking at your work before moving on so you need to show as much as possible in the 5 seconds or so they spend looking at your page.

Artstation is probably the best thing right now.
But i still think having your own website is also important. If one day Artstation is down or closing (Remember CGHUB), you still have a way to present your work on the web !

Artstation is great as a portfolio gallery. I imagine you would need website if you are doing very different art, like 3D art, traditional art, photography, etc. You can structure everything better with a website. Artstation have albums, but they don't appeal to be presentive enough, at least to me.

What about for non illustration/CG positions?

What about the website artstation provides with pro and plus subscriptions? A lot of people on artstation already have pro and plus so that included website is a bonus, especially if you have your domain name already?

Just today I had this conversation with my teachers where they told us a custom website was a better option. I felt so much better when you guys said that assignments are pointless because I have this problem now: Teachers just care about a deadline and want fast work instead of encouraging us to put quality & presentation in our work, I really feel like i'm wasting my time. I suppose quality is a priority over time. I know studios would want both, but isn't it better to focus on quality and the more projects you do the faster you'll get?

I think is valuable to pay for Artstation pro, that way you get your own space that you can send to client instead of sending stuff from your profile which sometimes has "related content" that may be much better than yours.

While artstation is a great way to show your works with the artist community. I think it's good to point out that artstation is a business . I think there is a misunderstanding between your community page and your artstation portfolio (which has limited feature by default ) If you pay 80 euros per year you will be able to choose a unique website template and link it with your domain name.(Which I guess is a mark of profesionalism and a very important feature of the pro version)
But in term of website building Artstation doesnt offer much compared to professional website creator, but its community.

Maybe nowadays taking a step away from these giant website isnt a bad to do, Website building has never been so easy and thousands of template already exist. It can literaly cost you 20bucks per year to run your custom portfolio website. (and a single footer icon can directly link your portfolio to your artstation page. )
I guess it all depends on your budget, the interest of learning how to designing your own website (which is always a cool learning skill), and your free time.
But at the end of the day remember that nothing matter more than great art x)

Just wondering about one little detail, what would be your preferred way to review portfolio on Artstation.. should be it "Show All Projects" or "Show Albums"?

Like, if I am applying for a job position that has focus on retopo and I have various artworks.. would it be better if I had "Show Albums" with an album that has just retopology examples or should I just leave it at "Show All"? :p

What is first thing (second and third) you look at when enter on somebody portfolio ? Blogs, sell items etc. matter to you somehow or you prefer to see best pieces miniatures and nothing more matter except nice segregation tabs to filter things like drawings, 3D models, professional things etc (because such thing like tabs is must have and everybody should create those ). I gonna reshape my artstation soon so hope to see some tips :)
