The Silverdale Hoard - Lead Container

Initially mistaken for a mere lump of lead, the Silverdale Hoard's discovery turned into a treasure trove revelation. While lead containers were known in Viking-age hoards, finding one so well-preserved is rare. Its careful use suggests the original owner's intention to protect their valuable items for a future return that never happened. Yet, the lead container's role in preserving these treasures for over a millennium stands as a testament to its enduring value.

The Silverdale Hoard is on display at the JORVIK Viking Centre until mid-October 2023.
