The Silverdale Hoard - Unknown King

Within the Silverdale Hoard's 27 coins lay an extraordinary find: a unique silver penny previously unseen. This coin marks a previously unrecorded variety of Viking-age Northumbrian currency, bearing the name of a mysterious Viking ruler, "AIRDECONVT," absent from historical records. It beckons us to wonder how many more of our ancestors' names, lost to time, remain hidden beneath the soil, awaiting rediscovery by archaeologists.

The Silverdale Hoard is on display at the JORVIK Viking Centre until mid-October 2023.
