How Long to Cook Grain For Mushroom Spawn Jars?

How long to cook grains when making grain spawn jars for growing mushrooms? That's a difficult question to answer as it depends heavily on several conditions including the type of grain. I this video I share some rules of thumb I use to determine when the pre-cook is done and before they go into the pressure cooker (or in my case, the Instant Pot!)

I use bird seed that has many of these grains. Works everytime. Much cheaper. Parboil - starting from rapid boiling water - 5 minutes, not 1 second more. Then drain over mesh and let it cool.

Your videos are so helpful. I have some WBS I started with liquid culture. I used something similar to an instant pot! It’s going well so far. I inoculated 4/20/20.

With the millet I don't cook it at all I just spray and dump till the water is clear then I let it set in clean water over night with gypsum and coffee mixed in then I drain it off add a little more gypsum and coffee grounds mix it up let it sit in a strainer for about 30 min then jar it up and when I sterilize it I cover under the ring so that the grain absorbs the moisture back into itself and get about 30% cracking on the shells but I sterilize for 3 hrs so it has extra time to do this it's just another way to do it figured I would share good luck with your grow

I been trying to figure out grain for a little while now. I have now moved on to 3 hours at 15 psi and I have had less contamination in the grain now. But I have been doing nsns mallet and WBS and I have even done Pop corn The same way and I am now have more success . I hope this helps or maybe helps you think of another video. I enjoy your videos. Keep it up. People are learning.

Hello thanks the videos. I'm starting my first batch ever. I'm using wbs i thinknits cooked to much. Its starchy like you say jn this video. Should I throw it out and re cook the grain? I dried it after cooking over a rack with a fan very thin layer so I don't think its just to wet I think the corn especially overcooked. Should I just soak the grains 24 hours then pressure cook? Or just really wash the grain after the cook so the starch is gone.

Thank you! Do you find after any of the different grains you are using are cooked do they take the same amount of time once in the jars using the instant pot including rye berries?

If so I think you cover that cooking time in your other videos.
