One day at Mount Vernon, a young boy climbed into a window, fell, and hurt himself. George Washington, who had advanced rheumatism then, called for his servant to help. When the boy recovered, Washington asked why the boy had come in. The servant told him the boy wanted to get a look at the president. Washington then asked to see the boy.

“You wanted to see the president, did you? Well, I am George Washington.”

“No!” retorted the boy, “You are only just a man. I want to see the President!”

This is the history of George Washington who was a president, a general and a Founding Father of a new nation. But, most of all, it is the story of George Washington the man. Many of the anecdotes related herein are true stories told by the people who were his own family and friends.

The entire world has had it's own history of slavery. Black, White, Asian, mostly just poor people who couldn't defend their liberty. It's a very unfortunate reality of a very young nation. We cannot judge people so long ago to our standards today. We can be VERY proud of any courageous attempt to speak out against or invite debate on an issue that would have you killed in an ally somewhere. Our forefathers (Black and White Americans alike), whether or not they themselves in a conflicted manner participated in a practice handed down to them did start the change and intellectual evolution of thought and heart that brought to fruition the Civil War which in turn freed men and women and gave them the ability to fight for every last right due to them. I think that is amazing and worthy of our respect.

Fun Fact, Martha Washington freed the slaves after George's death. It was for safety reasons, fearing they'd turn against her.
