Crime has been on the rise, according to Statistics Canada’s Violent Crime Severity Index. RCMP officials have told Global News that 53 per cent of the homicides committed in their jurisdiction have been perpetrated by someone on community release, parole or probation. ‘The West Block’ host Mercedes Stephenson interviews Justice Minister Arif Virani about his government’s bail reforms for violent repeat offenders. Minister Virani also addresses the recent attacks at two Jewish schools and a synagogue.

Plus, a New York jury found former U.S. president Donald Trump guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in a hush-money trial. This marks the first time in U.S. history that a former or serving president has been criminally convicted. Regarding the increased rate of violent crime in Canada, for the most part we are too lenient on violent offenders, and the courts place way too much emphasis on the rights of criminal offenders. For instance with regards to gun control, if a law enforcement officer were to show up at the residence of a law abiding legitimate firearms owner to perform a random inspection, to ensure all firearms were safely stored etc. and the owner was too busy to have it happen then, the officer could have a warrant issued to perform said inspection without leaving the driveway.
Contrary to that, my understanding is Gabriel Wartman was reported to the RCMP as being illegally in possession of firearms,
some months before his infamous shooting spree. My understanding is, when approached by the RCMP to get a search warrant,
the judge in question refused the warrant because no photographic evidence of said firearms was available.
