How I Finally Got Good at Drawing the Face - 3 Tips that took me out of Beginner Hell

📝 SHOW NOTES:
Big credit goes to the illustrator Chyan as I first encountered the box and turnarounds method through his course (which was one of the resources I used to study in those 2 months).
As I'm showing you the actual practice and studies I did during those 2 months, some of the study sketches were from there, among other resources and my own experimentation.
I eventually developed my own way to apply the method to suit me and my style, and that's what I share in the video. But Chyan's teaching really helped form the foundation for it, so big shoutout to him!

Also sorry for the blurred part at the end, some of the studies I was showing was from a resource that doesn't allow people to show their studies of it, so I edited it out.

"You should be the master of a tool, not the slave of it"
Wise words, I learnt much from this

I was always taught that the head should be based from a circle and yea it technically does since the skull is round but using boxes instead makes drawing heads in perspective so much easier! It also saves time of remembering stuff that would only happen in certain angles like the cheek being more pronounced in others while some not. I’ve been drawing the head for 3 years now but still inconsistent at it. This would help a heck ton!

It all makes sense now. The reason why I gave up art was because I gave up on improvement because the whole reason I started drawing in the first place was to get better. And I had no motivation because I thought that no matter how hard I tried, I wouldn’t be good enough and that made me wonder what the point of it was. What I’m saying is that I think I can get better and I feel motivated to do what makes me happy again.

Starting to take up drawing as a challenge this summer. Super motivating to see how much you improve in a few months over your first few examples of past art!

As someone who gave up on drawing a few years ago due to a few reasons, I find your video series on how to draw amazing. When I remember back when I was actively trying to get better there weren't any good artists that would explain how they did things, so you going out of your way and explain how you do things is amazing to watch. Who knows, maybe I'll start drawing again because of these videos.

I haven't even started to learn how to draw, but already, your video's give amazing tips to look out for, and you explain it so well that I as a non-artist understand it. I just can't wait to start learning whenever I see a video of yours!

This is amazing. I've never seen artists actually talk about their learning process withiut slipping in a "here's my Patreon". Thanks so much.

I can relate to that feeling of frustration, I didn't understand what I was doing wrong with the head and how to fix it, thanks to you I might be able to overcome this problem finally. Although I have to say your art looks really good even before fixing these mistakes.

Your art improvement from 2018 to now is insane! I always drew from intuition, so my skills mostly improved slowly through the years. Seeing such progress in such short amount of time is crazy! Really inspires me to apply myself to nurture my skills instead of just leaving them at whatever level they came naturally. Se how far they can go with real practice.

Will be checking more of your tutorial and art, awesome stuff man.

ive watched quite a few other art videos, none of them are as detailed as yours, nor did they give any easy to use reference. the fact that you also give levels for us to see which one we want to learn is too useful, keep it up :)

I just want to say I love your videos Oriday! I struggled to get faces and perspective right for a while now and many tutorial and guides always uses the circle method which has never worked for me. The face was always off and it affected the rest of the drawing.
Seeing the examples and the way you explained the tips was helpful! I been practicing the box method and I can see an improvement. Thank you!

I am no where near being an actual artist. However, I've been learning how to rig in live 2d, and the hardest thing I've encountered so far is making the face look right. Whenever I implement the XY movement of the face, it just doesn't look right. And this tutorial is actually helping me and giving me ideas on how I should implement these features! Especially the box method!
