Andromeda & Milky Way Collision in Universe Sandbox

The Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way Galaxy are two of the largest galaxies in the Local Group, a cluster of galaxies that includes dozens of smaller galaxies. Scientists believe that the two galaxies are on a collision course and will eventually merge together in a few billion years, forming a single, larger galaxy.

The collision between the Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies is a slow process that will take place over hundreds of millions of years. The two galaxies are currently moving towards each other at a speed of about 110 km/s (68 mi/s) and are separated by a distance of approximately 2.5 million light-years.

As the two galaxies approach each other, their gravitational pull will cause them to begin to distort and warp each other's shapes. The stars within the galaxies will also begin to interact, with some being flung out into space and others being captured by the combined gravitational pull of the two galaxies.

Eventually, the two galaxies will merge together into a single, larger galaxy that scientists have dubbed "Milkomeda." This new galaxy will be a hybrid of the two original galaxies, with stars and gas clouds from both contributing to its formation.

The collision between the Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies is not expected to have any significant impact on Earth or the solar system, as the distances between stars are so vast that any collisions or interactions are extremely unlikely. However, the night sky will look very different in the future as the two galaxies merge together and new constellations are formed.
