Milky Way's Head On Collision

This animation depicts the collision between our Milky Way galaxy and the Andromeda galaxy. Hubble Space Telescope observations indicate that the two galaxies, pulled together by their mutual gravity, will crash together about 4 billion years from now. Around 6 billion years from now, the two galaxies will merge to form a single galaxy. The video also shows the Triangulum galaxy, which will join in the collision and perhaps later merge with the Andromeda/Milky Way pair.

It's amazing how in 4 billion years the 3 largest galaxies in the Local Galactic Group is so close to one another

i don't understand. if all galaxies are expanding away from each other, how can we collide with andromeda ?

Well, the sun only has enough fuel for about 4.5 billion more years so maybe we won't be around for the time when they hit straight on, in 5.1 billion years.  Those will be some *bad* times everywhere in both galaxies!

Come to think of it, being extinct at any time in the future seems like a bad thing.  

But, hey, maybe we can get a new sun during the disruption caused by the first swipe, in  3.88 billion years.
