One thing that made me respect Rudyard Kipling a heck of a lot was the start of one of his short stories: "We call them Eskimau, but they call themselves Aleaut, so that is what I will call them in this story." A rare sight of respect towards a non-white culture for the 1800s.

I love that this channel goes so far beyond shallow nostalgia and includes not only legitimate media historical research, but also thoughtful critical commentary that doesn't avoid uncomfortable political questions about cherished media.

I love how you incorporate education about indigenous ppl and poc into your videos. As a black person this means so much, I have a ton of respect for you. 💯💯💯

Damn. For all the talk about how “Modern Nickelodeon relies on random humor”, there sure was quite a bit of that random humor in the earlier years.

Small point about the term "Indian" to refer to Indigenous Americans, the various tribes didn't really have an overarching identity, until Europeans imposed one on them, so many natives cultures have adopted that term to identify themselves, in contrast to the Inuit, who pretty uniformly call themselves Inuit, not Eskimo

Woo hoo! Thanks for doing this! I love the hook you took with it....I have to admit when I suggested it, and then I saw how, thematically, you were doing your Sample Platters, I thought, "oh wow...there is nothing worthwhile to talk about in that particular episode (I was only fascinated by proto-Dennis Miller and it has obsessed me for thirty years with me thining it was a fever dream), but you knocked it out of the park. Looking forward to the book!

I was shown Nanook of the North in high school, in the year 1999, with the teacher not saying a single thing about the whole movie being staged and letting us think it was all real. Though a few of us did at least catch on there was no way in hell to get one of the huge cameras of the time into an actual igloo.

I watched this show as a small child in the mid 80s, having no idea the last episode had been filmed when I was 4. I remember a couple of years watching it to see if there was ever a new episode, but I had no clue they were still airing this in 1992.

Hern, afraid of flying to the North Pole?!?
Well, if he doesn't want to go with Dave,
he can always replace Hern with...ANGELA!!!

2:33 Pinwheel made the same joke about flying. I haven't seen it since the 80s. But Silas the Snail was flying around and mentioned someone looked like an

Hmmm, I have met some people who have colloquially referred to all ice cream bars as Eskimo Pies. Older people, obviously, I'd say, nobody born in the U.S., later than the early forties but yeah, I might have to slightly disagree there, 'cause that was a slight thing, for a little while. Before freezers became a common household item and more brands of ice cream novelties could be made and sold, and there wasn't really a more well-established ice cream novelty industry out there, the brand, Eskimo Pie, was pretty big, big enough that at one point, it was the generic word for any barred/stick ice cream covered in chocolate coating.

Even the tribes that use the term, didn't like that product name.

I don't think this was established: Do all 26 episodes of "Out of Control" exist among collectors?

The explanation for why the show ran as long as it did has to the the Full House effect. I knew the show as “Joey from full house’s Nickelodeon show” even at the time

I remember watching “Out of Control” on Nickelodeon when I was a kid. I used to be able to do Diz’s screech, too. As you may know, Dave Coulier actually began saying his famous “Cut, it, out!” catchphrase on this show & not “Full House”.

How about reviewing the “Marc vs. Harvey” episode of “Super Sloppy Double Dare” for a future “Nick Knacks Sample Platter” episode? Thanks!

Eddie's Pie? Throw the Iron Maiden mascot Eddie on the packaging and you've got a product that most heavy metal fans would line up to buy.

I remember this episode...outdated humor aside, it was fun to see Diz fill in as host, along with the early Dennis Miller segment and Dave having fun with Hern's fear of flying!

So, I'm gonna say this as a kid of the late 90's and early 2000s, but I actually think that you're 100% in the right for this video explaining the very blatant difference, but also my lesson on why this is not okay came from the Arthur spin-off Postcards from Buster, when the character ended up visiting an Inuit family in Alaska and they explained to the character of Buster Baxter, and to the kids at home, that the term Eskimo is a slur and isn't okay.

The thing about this show was…….and this may just be my impression there may be a huge Out of Control fan base out there. It seems like there was this intention to make a kind of SNL/SCTV for kids, but those behind it really didn’t get how to write jokes for kids. The assumption was “loud and fast paced and laugh track” and that’s all you need. Every other episode youd watch with the expectation that you’d be taken into this wacky studio of hilarious hijinks……….and they’d be about as anti funny as this (Pee Wees Playhouse is kinda close to what I think they were aiming for but that was a massive success where out of control was never more than a mild guffaw)

Then again Dave Coulier wasn’t exactly funny on full house either

There was a time when PBS would constantly air Monty Python's Flying Circus for a long time. I assume that Out Of Control was Nickelodeon's answer to Monty Python's Flying Circus, at least in Cy Schinder's opinion.
