Powerful Life Poetry: Invictus by English poet, writer, critic and editor - William Ernest Henley.
Read by John Mydrim Ballantyne Davies.

William Ernest Henley (23 August 1849 – 11 July 1903) was an English poet, writer, critic and editor in late Victorian England. Though he wrote several books of poetry, Henley is remembered most often for his 1875 poem "Invictus". A fixture in London literary circles, the one-legged Henley was also the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's character Long John Silver (Treasure Island, 1883), while his young daughter Margaret inspired J. M. Barrie's choice of the name Wendy for the heroine of his play Peter Pan (1904).

Speaker: John Mydrim Ballantyne Davies

INVICTUS
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

I sit on the gate of free will, knowing I may or may not be able to change it, but I alone have the choice as to how I perceive the world around me. Only I, may choose to act as the highest version of myself or

the lesser. I find peace in knowing that all is just as it should be, and clarity unfolds in it's own time. I see that I can lay my head down with only self in mind and wake up in need, or I can lay my head down with

humanity in mind, and wake up in grace. I no longer refuse the lessons placed before me. Leaving the negative past where it belongs, I have the freedom to evolve and grow into a person to be admired.

I strive only to live in the now. I see clearly that adjustments to my life can only happen in this present moment and at no other. I realize that I am defined by my choices in this moment. I aim to disregard and shed

past consepts about myself that no longer describe the person I'm becoming. My higher self is always evolving and manifesting by my very thought, that I alone have power over. I seek to bring only

courage and perseverance with me from my past. I am never a victim, only in a state of deep learning love for self. I know that I can only vibrate back to me, what my current mindset is vibrating out. I see life

as a mirror and work toward the understanding that most of my thoughts about those around me are only a reflection of how I unconsciously see myself. I recognize that thoughts manifest

into moods, that grow into attitudes, that lead to lifestyles. I understand that I alone am the keeper and tender to my thoughts.

I have no need to compete, in any way against my brother or sister,

causing separation and animosity. I open my mind to the likenesses of others, and in doing so I restore connectedness, respect, and compassion, which is shown back to me in

abundance. I understand that in creating heaven for others, I create heaven for myself.  I then can experience the peace of serenity.

No. Christ is King. Anybody who thinks he is the captain of his soul is going to find misery and enslavement. True freedom is only found in Jesus.
