I love Kombucha, and would love to make my own, thanks mate! One question: Can you make your own SCOBY from scratch or would it be best to buy a kit so as to avoid getting "bad" bacteria in it?

I always thought it was a russian (post soviet) thing. What we call it is literally translated as "tea fungy". Was very popular some time ago - almost everyone had 3l jar filled with tea and big scoby on top. Just rinse it once in a while, add new tea and it grows more layers. Sometimes we laugh at it because it looks like pickled crepes. I know it is very healthy but I never liked it. Thank you for an idea how to make it tasty))

I tried making my own Kombucha a few years ago and was told to put it on a heating pad. I actually gave up making my own because it always came out tasting like vinegar instead of Kombucha... do you think the heating pad caused this or was it something else?
