I am in the training my replacement stage and then I will be gone in a couple months. Another good thing about retiring for me is giving a younger person a chance at career advancement.

The right way is walk in and say to your boss I am leaving and give them your stuff and then leave. I live in a right to work state and when a person gives notice they just tell you to leave.

Thank you for the video. My day is coming as soon as I can get over the feeling that I am letting everybody down by leaving loose ends. Cheers!

I am going to be laying this down to my boss in the next few days. Giving them just over 4 months lead time. I am ready!

Depends on the circumstances! In my case I told my boss when i got the promotion that i would be retiring in 2 or so years. Two years later (now) i told my boss i was retiring this year and would decide on a date. Feb 1 i noted my last work day March 1 takes 6 weeks vacation then officially April 11. Indicated dates were negotiable. Its been 2 weeks and my boss went radio silent to my surprise as we should be working on a replacement! I work for an oil major as a project lead. At the end I hold all the cards as im financially independent so i could just walk away now but will not. BTW my retirement letter was just as you noted.

I feel like for the past year or so, I’ve been crying Wolf. The closer I’m getting, ( 9 months away ) it’s freaking me out. My lovely wife who is slightly more mature than I is super duper supportive and keeps reminding me how close it is, I hear “ 1 day closer” on a daily basis. Like Ernie mentioned, work is all I’ve done since 8 years old, responsibilities came to me very early, be it not 1 or 2, but 3 paper routes, Ugg, what a drag, every afternoon, then a dishwasher, Robert House of Pancakes, 2 long stinky, slippery years every weekend, and it’s been that way non stop until now at a ripe young age of 61. Now comes the self convincing stage. I need a band aid to just rip off, why is there now hesitation ?

No I do not hate my job, nor do as love it…. I love the every other Friday 💰💰, finally 100% debt free so we save more than ever……. I’m all over the place mentally. I need to go breathe in a paper bag. 😵‍💫

For rank and file, why give notice at all. (rhetorical) Why not slack off, wait for a layoff, collect the severance and re-education funding, and leave with an excuse most current hiring agencies understand as a n acceptable reason to leave a job. Obviously, don't put your pension at risk, but most dont get a pension anymore.... Trust me, no matter how important you feel your job was, they will not miss you within a week of you leaving.... Sorry, that's just the way it is.

I work in Wisconsin. My boss is in Texas. My notice will have to be by phone call. I plan to give notice the end of this month, three months notice.

Well the Company I worked for you had to give three months notice so they could arrange your pension plan etc. I think today they can do it in 1 month. I naturally had to have it checked with an Financial Advisor. Six years after I retired I got my State Pension here in Ireland. I paid into my company pension all along with good Tax relief. I was glad to retire. You do miss the chat in the office but so many other things take over!

announcing your retirement early is the most brain-dead thing you could do. YOU WILL BE CARRYING A CARDBOARD BOX OUT OF THE OFFICE WITHIN HOURS OF YOUR ANNOUCEMENT

I disagree about not talking to HR first. There are things I need to know about how long you need to stay to get your bonus, and other things like that. I can’t set up a firm date without that info.

Ernie’s experience was something like mine. It felt weird, but I felt that I won because I got to leave on a day of my choosing. I have no regrets about how I left. But from the moment that I decided, some months before, it felt weird, and just got weirder each day…. Truthfully, it’s still kinda weird.

when your boss says to you, " you better lie or I will BASH your face in." and HR silences you. I dont feel like giving notice!!!

Not taking into account many modern workplaces. Where I am there is no office. There’s an open space on a floor that my boss never shows up to because he hates commuting and hates interpersonal anything. He also has a very low opinion of paper. So for me it’s gonna be a plea for a ms teams call. As for the letter, who knows. Nothing is gonna change hands. Will likely be an impersonal email, which is one of the reasons I want out. Tired of my socially dead, silo job.

I gave 4 months notice. Verbal and in writing. I’m. 22 days from the official date of retirement.

Based on your responses, I guess both of you have not been laid off in your jobs.
