RAW vs DNG Photo Files-Whats the Difference?

I answer the question of using a RAW vs DNG file as a photo. Which one should you use and photograph with? What's the difference between a RAW and DNG image? Mainly a RAW, digital negative file, photo is coded from the camera manufacturer and DNG is proprietary and meant for Adobe products. Here are the pros and cons listed in the video above. Do you shoot in RAW and convert to DNG, shoot with DNG or just use the natural RAW option?

DNG is a open standard. Anyone can make software that reads or writes it. If adobe went under someone else would make software that could read it. So don't worry about that. 6:00
In fact this is why the Library of Congress uses DNG. Because it's available to everyone.

Digital Negative (DNG) patent license:

"Adobe hereby grants all individuals and organizations the worldwide, royalty-free, nontransferable, nonexclusive right under all Essential Claims to make, have made, use, sell, import, and distribute Compliant Implementations.

“Compliant Implementation” means a portion of a software or hardware product that reads or writes computer files compliant with the DNG Specification."

Adobe has a free DNG converter that is updated with latest RAW file formats before Lightroom and Photoshop. also more editors can read DNG format that the camera specific RAW formats

You stand more chance of corrupting a DNG file because all the RAW edits are written to the file. Each time you edit, the DNG file is written again. The more times this happens the more there is a chance of corrupting the file.
RAW files only have a library file and/or XMP file altered during edits. The RAW file is not touched and stays original so it is unlikely to be corrupted (other than a hard drive fault).

Since I use Lightroom 6 which is on my computer with a perpetual license, I cannot modify the RAW files straight out of my Nikon Z6. I have to convert them to DNG to edit. All my photos archived since purchasing the Z6 are saved in DNG.

The XMP and metadata is still there. Its just contained in the DNG container. DNG is open source, but Adobe dose still have a patent on it and its not free. Would like to see more software use it natively. Just incase Adobe did drop off the face of the earth. Just for extra security.

Hi Eric, I shoot JPEG and then convert to DNG, I have read that you can get the advantages of shooting in RAW this way. Is this true?...Julian

that's the one thing I struggle with is whether to shoot raw or DNG.

for editing its not a big deal to go back for me because i heavily use layers.
in fact i never even touch the original image at all . its all in separate layers so going back is as simple as ticking a box for me.

my only problem might be opening dng files i think.

I work with Capture One Pro and not Lightroom (I found it better than LR, my personal liking) and for my D850 I converted the RAW files to DNG with the free Adobe DNG converter. Now when I imported those DNG's in Capture One Pro 10, I see all the colors way dull - about 25-30% dull! When I see the same file saved as JPEG on other CARD I see that difference! What do you think about this? Maybe converting the RAW to DNG result in lose of some data? For now, all I have to do is wait for native D850 RAW support for next Capture One update....And maybe that time I can import both original RAW and DNG (of the same RAW file) side by side and compare them..But I strongly feel that there is (a little if not more) difference.

I've been considering buying the Capture One editing software for a while and it processes and retains RAW file info better than it does DNG

thanks for that, I recently bought Panasonic G9, the RAW files are RW2, I also have GH5 and GH4 and Nikon D4, all the RAW files from those cameras open in Win 10 and lightroom 5 except the RW2 from the G9. I now convert them to DNG and I am able to edit in light room5, but why the RW2 does not open in Win 10? I like to view the files before editing to see which once I want to keep, instead of converting to DNG first. any idea why RW2 wont open in Win 10? all other RAW files do open in Win 10.

Within the hour that Adobe goes belly up...DNG will be open source...no fear there...you have a much better chance of Nikon going under long before Adobe :-) - I don't convert my Canon RAW but I do my Fuji to DNG.
