Being a drone flyer I am used to DNG files as "RAW" setting on the drone saves a photo as a .DNG file.

I have to use an online tool to convert cr3 (Canon) to DNG. Linux Mint can show thumbnails of DNG but not cr3. Darktable can process both. Those of us that use Linux always find a way to get things done.

Hi Paul, the good thing about DNG is there is no loss in quality like you said, so you can re-edit the photo as many times as you like. I must admit i haven't tried DNG i use PNG FILE, the only drawback is it takes to much room on my laptop. Thanks for this video i found it useful to me and i might try using DNG FILE. 😃

Paul, this is so timely for me! Thank you. I’ve only recently begun working with Lightroom classic and in advertently created DNG files. In fact, in my instance of Lightroom, it appeared to be a default. I now know what they are, and how to better use them, although I’m not sure in the short term I will move from raw. Thank you again!

Note that the DNG Converter has to be updated for new raw formats, too. When Canon CR3 first came out, I had to wait a few weeks for Adobe to update. To do so, I had to use that miserable Canon software.

Great video !!. I have successfully converted the raw file to DNG, but I can't open it with the camera raw filter. I would appreciate any solution.

I am not sure I agree with your statement that DNG is as good as RAW. The reason RAW is better is that it contains unique features which a DNG which is a compromise so it can work everywhere. I do agree if you have a RAW image that can not be processed in your software that converting to DNG allows you to process them until the software catches up.

Good day Paul, I was also under the impression that the DNG, when edited, does not create a side car file and that the DNG file itself retains the information. This also cuts down some on the HD space required. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I have to convert to DNG due to still using old versions of ps6 and lr4. Sucks they won't patch them. But this works for me with no monthly fees.

Hi Paul...great video. I was wondering when converting RAW files to DNG, it asks if i want to "delete originals after successful conversion"? Will it make a difference if i do or dont? Also this will save spaec on my HD and does it save space immediately after converting?.

Captured DNG on my iPhone thinking I would have more pixels to work with but my laptop totally blew up with my editing software because the files were too big.
What can I do preserve ad many pixels as possible but not crash the laptop

I am trying to understand how, if Lightroom cannot edit a new raw file, how it can convert it to DNG.

Whenever I upload my RAW images to Lightroom it automatically converts to DNG without me asking it to.
Is this normal?
I'm a complete novice by the way.
