A Floppy Disk Drive is a computer disk drive that enables a user to save data to removable diskettes.A floppy disk is a disk storage medium composed of a disk of thin and flexible magnetic storage medium encased in a rectangular plastic carrier. It is read and written using a floppy disk drive (FDD).The floppy drive goes by other names too, like floppy disk drive, disk drive, floppy diskette, diskette drive, 3.5" drive, and 5.25" drive.Data is generally written to floppy disks in sectors (angular blocks) and tracks (concentric rings at a constant radius). For example, the HD format of 3½-inch floppy disks uses 512 bytes per sector, 18 sectors per track, 80 tracks per side and two sides, for a total of 1,474,560 bytes per disk.Although 8-Inch disk drives were first made available in 1971, the first real disk drives used were the 5 ¼-Inch floppy disk drives, which were later replaced with the 3 ½ Inch floppy disk drives.A 5 ¼-Inch floppy disk was capable of storing between 360 KB and 1.2 MB of data.The 3 ½-Inch floppy disk was capable of storing between 360 KB and 1.44 MB of data. For both sizes of floppy disk, the amount of data that could be stored was dependent on whether the disk was single or double sided and whether the disk was regular or high density.The floppy disk holds an astonishingly tiny amount of data when compared to newer technologies like SD cards, flash drives, and discs.Most floppy disks can only support 1.44 MB of data, which is smaller than the average picture.Today, due to their extremely limited capacity, computers no longer come equipped with floppy disk drives. This technology has largely been replaced with CD-R, DVD-R, and flash drives.A floppy disk is a magnetic media and stores and reads data on the floppy disk using a read head.The read/write head uses a magnetic polarity of 0 or 1. Reading this as binary data, the computer can understand
what the data is on the platter. For the computer to write information to the platter, the read/write head aligns the magnetic polarities, writing 0's and 1's that can be read later.
