To sum it up. They hate it as it’s more like D3 not D2.

For me it comes down to Monster Level Scaling. Diablo 3 wasn't the best game when it came out but I played it and even enjoyed it until they added that to it. I was so hyped for Diablo 4 when they said they were taking features from Diablo 2 until I played the beta and found out the monsters scaled to your level. What a major let down. Makes leveling feel so pointless and redundant.

Nostalgia was something that they said when some players didn't like Diablo 3, I think it's moreso a shift in art design, itemization, and game mechanics with timed cooldowns etc

It’s not nostalgia. I picked up D2R for the first time 2 months ago. Diablo 4 and it’s beta were my first experiences with the franchise. The beta left me wanting more so I picked up D2 since it was like $10, just to hold me over. I haven’t stopped playing since. I may not even get D4 at this point, waiting to see end game. D2R scratched the itch and then some, even for a brand new player in 2023

I had a damn blast playing diablo II casually back in the day and I knew full well a ton of the game's content (ladder, nightmare and hell difficulty, holy grail stuff) was hardcore shit and not up my alley. Knowing that those things existed didn't ruin the game for me, in fact I find that games containing things that you know you're not going to experience can make a game more exciting. I played world of Warcraft when I was a kid and I always marveled at and admired the people who did raids, rep grinds and PvP. It made the game something larger and more mysterious. Thinking that everything in a game should be made specifically for you is really entitled.

Just started playing Diablo 4 and I already need to vent about something that has me fuming. There is no way of knowing if an item is one handed or two handed. I just wasted my gold purchasing a weapon, not realizing it was a two handed weapon. This is the f’n stupidest oversight from a developer that has already made 3 other diablo games WTF!!!

Can we all just accept that they will never make a game as good as Diablo 2 ever again?

Blizzard isn’t an ambitious up-and-coming game developer with something to prove anymore, they’re a well established developer with clout who can stand to lose one dedicated fan-base in favor of more marketable zoomer casuals who don’t have the attention span for the subtle intricacies of Diablo 2 style mechanics.

I think the main reason D4 doesn’t appeal to D2 players is simply because it’s not D2, nothing will ever be D2, Blizzard doesn’t have it in them to make something as good as D2 ever again.

RNG has been present in gaming for loooong before D2 even existed.

the problem with these games nowadays is the gameplay loop. I feel like I'm the kid that has to do his chores before he can go outside and play. if you have a bunch of tiring gameplay loops in your game that prevent you from actually having fun, the games flawed severely. the reason why D2 was so great is there wasn't anything preventing you from just going out and killing things. nothing was mandatory to do in order to just play the damn game.

"Casual" is not an insult. Calling a Diablo game "casual" is. If you want a casual experience call it "Rainbow farm" and have at it, but don't bank on the hype from old school gamers that expect a Diablo level quality and experience under the Diablo name.

D2 is all about the loot mechanics and that's what keeps bringing us back. The cut scenes and general story are amazing but so are the ones in D3 and so far D4. The movement and the way you traverse is the same in all 3 minus teleport which is kinda broken in D2 but also adds a thing to strive to build if you're not a sorc. D2 is all about pushing to find the loot to get your character to broken mode where you can clear any area without coming close to dying. In the process you find items that make you want to build different chars or niche builds for fun. The way D3 and D4 just vomit upgraded loot at you every few minutes makes it very uninteresting until you are end game min maxing, there are way too many stats on the items now to where it takes so much time to figure out if it's even a benefit to your build that you could have played 10 mins longer and found another upgrade. In D2 you had to struggle a bit to find early gear to be able to push you to the next area and at times you couldn't even farm an area because of immunities. The fact that most unique items could be equipped by any class made them memorable, some easier to find than others, and then the opportunity to have best in class items that weren't even unique added another element for those players committed enough to find them. The payoff from trading was big too, if you found something amazing you could trade it to enable you to finish off your build. D3 and D4 will always fall short on staying power no matter how "cool" they make the skills, battle sequences, items look, or how much new content they add to the game. I hop on for a couple days, finish off the campaign, level up a bit until I get bored of the loot, and then shut it off for a few years until I feel like doing another char or checking out the campaign again.

What is capturing fun of repetition is that when you exit town in Diablo 2 you pick up perfect grey 15/15 ed socketed item, also some godly rares and even some mega good uniques (Hi high runes=)). On top of that you can trade it all. In Diablo 4 you skip everything except that 1 unique you never obtained. You can NOT even gamble it nor trade for it. Where is fun in that?

Diablo 2 is really a masterpiece.

Lets be honest with ourselves here. The only reason doing Mephisto runs is fun is because there is a waypoint right before the bossfight itself. There is no friction between you and pulling the slot machine as many times as you like.

My favorite thing about D2 is making a unique build that is unique to that character. It gives the character an identity. So a Blizz sorc instead of just a sorc. Then farming areas specific for that build. If you want to farm somewhere else, either rebuild your character and gear from the ground up. Or roll a new character, new build, new identity, new zones to farm.

Smart loot is probably my biggest problem. In D2, if I were playing an Amazon and got some sick Necro loot while farming, I'd heavily consider trying out a Necro to see if I'd like a build with the gear that dropped. I wouldn't be disappointed getting loot from a class I don't play in D4. If anything, it's just legendary salvage mats for my future good loot. Overall I love D4 thusfar, but smart loot is probably my biggest gripe

I tried to finish your sentence for you: "Running 1000 Mephisto runs in Diablo 2 is..." and I said soul-crushing. I was honestly blown away when you instead said super fun.

The fun with d2, when you kill diablo in hell its HARD (with little gear or no gear early game, generalizing) but as you get better gear you can genuinely feel the increased power. Its satisfying. If diablo 4 has bosses, with 9 mechanics, and the fights take 5 minutes, who wants to do that 1000 times? So you can get a random nameless leggo? Finding a griffons feels incredible because you KNOW what that is. Finding the lethargic arm of elmdormar (or whatever they will name shit in d4) is boring as shit.

Played every diablo game to date, Pre-purchased diablo 2, 3, d2r and 4.
I have enjoyed every diablo game to date.
They aren't meant to be the same game. Even when diablo 2 came out, there were things from diablo 1 I missed (Like how every class can learn any move, technically).
It's a different game with same continuous storyline.
Played the hell out of (no pun intended) every iteration to date and I'm sure 4 will be the same.

Tried the beta, was bored to death. Refunded my purchase and went back to Last Epoch.

Just wanted to say, big props for the Dungeon Siege praise at around 19:30 . Such a great fuckin game dude, the idea of playing an action style game, with a full party, with pause, and classless skill-system was just insane back in the early 2000's . IMO the sequels didn't hold up as much, but dude....DS1 was something. Plus, there was a Chicken Gun, a machine gun that fired chickens
