St. Jose Sanchez Del Rio, the fourteen year old Mexican martyr who was martyred in 1928 had a very painful death.  They cut the soles of his feet off. Made him walk on broken glass. On the way to his execution, they cut him with knives, suffocated him. Yet, through all that he remained steadfast and full of faith. Finally, they shot him in the head. The Church is built on the blood of martyrs.  God love them and may they pray for us.

FYI: Every single martyr did not muster up that strength and courage. It came DIRECTLY from God. God gave them the strength to withstand and die well.

Zachary, Simon Peter denied Jesus 3 times because of fear. He didn’t do that because he didn’t love Jesus. Jesus asked him 3 times when HE met them after the resurrection : “Simon, do you love me?”
The word that Jesus used for love was “agape”, it’s the highest form of love that one would die for the one he loves. Peter replied : “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you”. But the word that Peter used was “phileo”, it is also love but not to the point that you are brave enough to die for the other.
Still Jesus said : “Feed my lambs.” And Jesus asked him the very same question, Peter answered exactly the same, and Jesus also said “Feed my lambs” in response to that. Now here comes the beauty! When Jesus asked Peter for the third time, HE did not use “agape” anymore, HE lower it to “phileo”. Peter sadly answered, knowing his infidelity and all his weaknesses : “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Reading your writings made me remember what Peter said after the big catch of fish : “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man.”
Zachary, none of us can bear the martyrdom by our own strength. It is the Holy Spirit who makes all the saints embraced the sufferings with joy. By the way, Peter who kept answering using phileo … died giving his agape to the Lord. He was crucified like Jesus, only : upside down.. according to his own request. :) Let us just surrender all our weaknesses to the Lord.

St Blandina (162–177 AD) was bound to a stake & wild beasts were set on her. Legend says they did not touch her. After a few days, she was led into the arena to see her companions suffer. Finally, as the last of the martyrs, she was scourged, placed on a red-hot grate, enclosed in a net & thrown before a wild steer who tossed her into the air with his horns. In the end, she was killed with a dagger. This sounds like a horror movie.
