In the 1950s, a conversation between a geologist and a mathematician in a carpool to MIT led to a new technology that would revolutionize the energy exploration industry-- digital filters to to remove noise from seismic data. To test it, MIT grad students created the first digital seismic data, digitizing analog seismograms by hand to enter into MIT's first digital computer. One of those students, Dr. Sven Treitel, who is now a well-know figure in the world of exploration geophysics, shares the story in an interview with the MIT Earth Resources Laboratory.
