Istanbul, Turkey - the stunning Fatih Mosque, Fatih Camii in Istanbul. Let's visit the Fatih Mosque (Turkish: Fatih Camii, "Conqueror's Mosque" in English) which is an Ottoman mosque in the Fatih district of Istanbul, Turkey. The original mosque of Fatih Mosque (Fatih Camii) on the site was constructed between 1463 and 1470 on the site of the Church of the Holy Apostles. Fatih Mosque (Fatih Camii) was seriously damaged in the 1766 earthquake and was rebuilt in 1771 to a different design. Fatih Mosque (Fatih Camii) is one of the largest examples of Ottoman-Islamic architecture in Istanbul and represents an important stage in the development of classic Ottoman architecture. It is named after Ottoman sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, known in Turkish as Fatih Sultan Mehmed, the Ottoman sultan who conquered Constantinople in 1453.
The Church of the Holy Apostles was a Greek Eastern Orthodox church in Constantinople, capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. The first structure dates to the 4th century, though future emperors would add to and improve upon it. It was second in size and importance only to the Hagia Sophia among the great churches of the capital.

Vic, there are ancient maps of antique Apostolles Church. When you compare it with today's mosque, it seems the mosque didn't built on remains of church. When Mehmed II enter the city, firstly he wanted to see Hagia Sophia then Apostol Church. And he wait until 1462 to built that mosque but the church was already in bad form since 1200s due to West Romans attacks. However Mehmed II was know the situation of that church and tombs of emperors of Byzantine. He know that everything was stole but he still had respect them and built the mosque across the tombs area. So the mosque not built on remains of the church. There are a few little medrese (means education institute in Ottomans) builts over the tomb area now where is across the mosque. We can see this, Mehmed II's own decide about his tomb place choice. He was know that emperors were there and he wanted to stay there like latest Emperor of Comstantinople after his death. He was already born in Greek district and he were speeking Greek language. So he felt close to them.
Best regards...
