SHIPPING CONTAINER HOMES SUCK | rant and review from a builder

I love tiny homes and even have the Den Outdoors A-Frame cabin kit but shipping container homes don't make any sense to me.

They aren't efficient, they aren't easy to build or live in, they aren't a good bang for your buck so the ROI is terrible, and the list goes on. In this video, I have a bit of fun and have a quick vent/rant session about all of the reasons shipping container homes suck with the help of my new best friend Matt Neely.

Matt Neely

Born and raised in Tennessee. All the men in my family are contractors and the women are real estate agents. To say that I have been around the construction industry my entire life, is an understatement. I graduated Middle Tennessee State University in 2005 with a degree in Concrete Industry Management. I was employed as a project manager for years before I decided to go off on my own. I have been self-employed for the better part of 10 years. I currently own Native Restoration and Native Excavation. I have over 30 years of experience in the construction industry and am still learning something new every day.

I can't believe I just watched two clueless people who live in wooden homes, trying to rubbish container houses --
Container homes are way cheaper and easy to convert and work with.

You didn't say any cheaper alternatives and why exactly people are wrong about what they think about many aspects. Regular foundation pushers seems to forget that though probably need to own that land. That is a GIGANTIC factor because people who want to build these homes are usually poorer than regular home builders this means the option to own a movable home that you can place anywhere is more lucrative and quite possibly their only option. It's pretty easy to rent land and put something on and figure out how to move it later or finish paying for it and your home is already built. To build a traditional home you need to purchase a plot of land upfront. If you can do this then yeah containers lose their appeal because you gain nothing from their pros. If you're a young person, you can def purchase two 40ft containers. At that point you only need a spot, insulation, plumbing, electrical and a floor plain. That's far far far less daunting than getting financed from a bank etc and you can stagger the costs during the build and swap change many aspects of construction vsa regular home. Unless you are incredibly rich you simply do not have these options building a regular wood frame foundation home. There is simply no way you're going to purchase a bunch of wood and then hold it somewhere and then rent a piece of land to start building on and then build out the actual gigantic foundation for a home (which you can skirt around in shipping containers so long as you weld a long piece of metal spanning the length of the container underneath each), with that method you can just use concrete posts in the ground and still have no sagging from your containers and that simply costs way way less than a huge slab that is the entire square footage of your home. You guys are spot-on about there being something eclectic about them. It brings out the creative juices so you simply see far more beautifully designed homes from these unorthodox building materials versus regular built homes. Obviously there are cons to this building method but you guys are presenting it like it's just completely retarded to even consider it. And also if you build them properly, you're talking about something that will easily last 100 plus years making it a great investment for that reason alone, and there's also the novelty factor which will definitely allow you to sell your home for more than you paid to build it so there really is no con with these even when including the costs if you think it all the way through. The only real problem would be if you make a bunch of mistakes and simply build something barely habitable or that will need to be demolished and rebuilt.

Container homes look so cool though - i think i would still build one but thanks for the heads up on the common misconceptions.

The way you summarize the conversation in the grey box on the left part of the screen is great Tiny. It really helps viewers better retain the information given and it's a solid way to make your vids stand out from other content creators. Keep up the good work!

Are they efficient in Florida if you can have several of them and a full build by an architect? Is it cheaper than a traditional home build if I already have land?

The problem here is that people tend to go overboard building these homes... But my problem with all these distractors coming out of the woodworks is that nobody has this kind of smoke for conventional homes that cost 300k and is made out of wood and cardboard... Most conventional homes wont even last 50 years.... And yet all these builders are coming out and bashing container homes all of a sudden... Lets face it... American homes are overpriced scams, European homes made of brick cost just as much but will last 500 years! And lastly, If you maximize the benefits of using containers then you save tons of money!

Im literally to the sheetrock phase of my container home and im still under $15k. I havent welded plasma cut a single thing. Cheap grinder and a few cutting discs cut every hole i needed, then riveted everything in. I also diy spray foamed it myself off amazon.

Imao😂. Every trade has one guy who is negative wore out tradesmen abd other one who doesn’t have his own opinion 😂😂
I can tell 100% that “stick build” guy has genuine hate for metal being a wood maker framer etc.
Even monkey can operate miter saw 😂😂
Cheers

I'm confused. More expensive than a house in a city or suburb? Yeah, right.

I like your videos because they’re well researched and balanced. Not so much with this one. Just two guys in agreement that they don’t like shipping containers. No real substance. Again I love your content but this video gets a D+

Framed in one end of an insulated container, the reefer unit was still connected to the other end. Put in a small wood stove and made it 4 Minnesota winters in it easily. Tight on space, but will be a future bug out shack in the woods

I agree that shipping containers are not DIY projects, however I disagree with much ofg what you both particularily if you have never built one. I live in one and have lived in it for years and love it. But I had it built for half of what you could buy a stick built home. My container home is efficient and well ventilated with solar and water catchment system and wrap around porch. I think you both are missing the point.

I think if you can get some small container like room where you can sleep and build your additional home that attaches that container so your room can than later be converted into some sort of living area ventilated and concrete bedroom.

I cannot actually comment on the building of a container home; however I would strongly recommend that you take a trip to the Netherlands and check out some of their Container Homes / Apartments / Store Fronts. I find them to be extremely useful and effective resource if manufactured / built properly by a professional..

Are containers floors originally chemically treated.? Dangerous unless replaced for living in.
Is the paint originally used on containers toxic??
