Indonesia Is The Second Country In Asia To Launch A Rocket

Indonesia National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) claims that they has successfully launched an experimental rocket, RX450-5, on Wednesday (02/11). The RX450 rocket itself is an experimental Sonda rocket with a diameter of 450 mm and a flying range of 100 km. The history of rockets and missiles in Indonesia began when Indonesia purchased various SAM (Surface to Air Missile) missiles from the Soviet. In the Soekarno era, the purchase of weapons including rockets or missiles was carried out to prepare for the Dwikora and Trikora contrasts.

According to UGM website, rocket manufacturing technology in Indonesia has been initiated since the 1960s. UGM students who are members of the Indonesian Student Rocket Association (PRMI) successfully launched the first rocket made in Indonesia in 1963, named Gama-I.

Since then, national rocket research and development has been very passionate to fly more rockets in the future. Air Force and ITB also enlivened the development of a rocket that successfully launched the Kartika rocket 1 a year after the successful launch of Gam. Indonesia even became the second country in Asia and Africa, after Japan, to successfully launch its own rocket. And this achievement was welcomed by President Soekarno, who later formed LAPAN in 1963, through Presidential Decree No. 236 of 1963 regarding LAPAN.

The head of LAPAN, Thomas Djamaluddin in a discussion forum some time ago explained that since LAPAN was founded, rocket technology has become their main goal compared to some other technologies since according to Mr. Soekarno nuclear technology and space technology will be a foundation of Indonesia if the country wanted to become a developed country. Thus, the two technologies were then brought into a serious level by forming a formal institutions; BATAN and LAPAN.

Since 2015 LAPAN has launched 5 experimental rockets, including the latest RX450-5. Lapan hopes that the latest launch event can provide the latest data on the development of rockets, so that the manufacture of Indonesian rockets will continue to be refined.
