The final years of the 19th century saw the population of the USA double in a single generation, and a similar increase in the gap between rich and poor. Food, coal, steel and oil made fortunes for some, but seldom for the workers on the front lines of industry.

Across America, debate grew over whether the rich should be seen as deserving of their good fortune, or lucky and obliged to redistribute some wealth through good works. Should the government protect private property, or look after those left out of the new boom? Was growth or justice more important?

In the courts and on the streets, controversy raged. THE GILDED AGE examines the difficulties America faced, and the dilemmas that are still relevant today, in this brand new AMERICAN EXPERIENCE two-parter.

Are we a nation that is unequal or equal with its citizens?

This remains unanswered to this very day.
