What is GEO? (and Why It's The FUTURE OF SEO)

GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is one of the main terms being used to describe getting AI chat tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity to recommend your business, product, services, or brand.

Previously, if we wanted to find something out, we'd go straight to Google every time. But more and more these days, people are going to these AI chat tools instead.

Now, of course, Google has noticed this changing user behaviour, and it's built its own contender in this race, the AI Overviews, which are built into the search results.

Only time will tell whether this is enough to keep people using Google or if it will start to lose some of the market share that it's built up over years to these other chat tools.

You're probably thinking — “How do I get these tools to recommend my business, my website, my products and services?”

Thinking about learning SEO, but I agree with the idea here

These LLM systems will need high-quality/authority content to serve in their responses, and focusing on ranking for that will be important in the future.

Genuine question: why did you go with GEO over AIO, AEO or SXO?

Perplexity refers to Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) as Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO).

Search Experience optimisation (SXO) is also becoming a more popular term in the states to be a more platforms neutral term.

My take is if you’re optimising for more than just search engines then your referring to SXO (kind of like SEM) if you optimising for just Generative Engines/AI/Answer Engines this would be either be one of the 3: AIO, GEO or AEO 😂

Considering just how often AI is wrong, or even totally just makes stuff up, I'm staggered at how many people are using it as a search engine replacement.

It’s interesting to see that good SEO leads to good GEO. But I wonder what happens when people keep using GEO, does the feedback loop break?

This folks is called "Blue Ocean Strategy". I just hate they made that TERM which already exist in SEO world = GEO. GEO MEANS LOCATION. If you say GEO SEO = That would mean optimizing for a specific area/location for your business to market. Whoever coined this phrase I want to slap in the face so bad.

Here's the kicker. NOTHING NEW. All you guys have to do is focused in the SAME STRATEGY = build good SEO optimized content + Geo-targeting keywords. Your content WILL STILL appear in there - AI tools like Copilot. The algo of AI is not the same as Google SERPS. This gets ugly if OpenAI decides to play God or the gatekeeper. Which is why I hate where this is heading.
