He was one of a kind. I caught a lecture of his in Boston and after that ended he joined us at a bar consuming one Heineken after another. He had standards, but admitted that he warned us not to go full gonzo unless we were ready to live the life of your imagination with all the consequences of it. He sensed I had a reluctant yearning for danger. He liked my piece on his lecture, though and I had the letter framed. I dropped him off at Logan a wiser soul. Thank you, Gonzo!

Some high powered mutant. Gods own prototype. Too weird to live, too rare to die

“There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.”
There are so many great quotes from Fear and Loathing that it really is hard to pick a favorite. I think this might be the one I like best!

"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked the tendency is to go as far as you can take it". -
Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Hearing Hunter recite ‘The Wave’ always sends chills down my spine. That sense of communal lose. Seeing it was all for nothing and that the old guard still ruled the land. Business as usual.

Ugghhh one of my bigest pet peeves surrounding the telling of Hunter S. Thompson's life, is when his real morning routine is mixed up with the one fabricated by someone else. This video uses the one falsely made up by a journalist. He pretty much guessed at what he thought Hunter would do and published it. Here's the much more entertaining quote from the man himself describing his daily morning breakfast routine (it's still ridiculous ofc):

"I like to eat breakfast alone, and almost never before noon; anybody with a terminally jangled lifestyle needs at least one psychic anchor every twenty four hours, and mine is breakfast. In Hong Kong, Dallas, or at home—and regardless of whether or not I have been to bed—breakfast is a personal ritual that can only be properly observed alone, and in a spirit of genuine excess. The food factor should always be massive: Four bloody Marys, two grapefruits, a pot of coffee, Rangoon crêpes, a half-pound of either sausage, bacon, or corned beef-hash with diced chilies, a Spanish omelette or eggs Benedict, a quart of milk, a chopped lemon for random seasoning, and something like a slice of Key lime pie, two margaritas, and six lines of the best cocaine for dessert... Right, and there should also be two or three newspapers, all mail and messages, a telephone, a notebook for planning the next twenty four hours, and at least one source of good music... All of which should be dealt with outside, in the warmth of the hot sun, and preferably stone naked."

HST was one of the very few celebrities I actually cried upon hearing of their death. Read all his books multiple times years before and admired the man greatly despite the fact he could be a degenerate louse. It was an enormous shock but in a way I'm glad he didn't live to see the state our country is in today...you know he'd be driven apoplectic with rage and grief with every passing day by the slow poisoning of democracy.

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

Ever since I read Fear & Loathing in highschool, I've wanted to live more like Hunter. He always seemed fearless and ready to try anything at least once. "Do it now: Pure Gonzo Journalism"

don't forget that hunters son, immediately after discovering good father's death, took his shotgun, went outside and fired 4 shots in the air in his father's honor
