You say you aren’t a drum teacher. I am and I think you’d be excellent at it. Your communication in this video is very simple clear and easy to follow.

For Phil Taylor the fast double-bass was just a warm-up exercise, not part of any song. One day, Lemmy & Eddie came to the rehearsal, heard Phil doing it. They liked it and said "keep playing!"... and "Overkill" was born (1979 before Ace) The future band Overkill heard the song and named themselves after it.

I'm guitarist but I've been always very fond of D-Beat drum pattern and the music based on it. Your channel is pure gem for those interested in D-Beat. Love the covers as well.

Greetings from Bogotá, Colombia.

Got it down and was able to build up some speed and fills, thanks to this video. Much appreciation from this beginner.

Nice video and good teaching. Thumps up.

I'm playing D-Beat for more then 20 years now. It's absolutely true to start slow, get this beat down (and clean), and keep building tempo very slow (it's annoying, I know). Even high tempo is just a question of muscle memory - I was frustrated, 10 years in, to get back to the drawing board and build that speed and muscle memory again because I noticed I was kind of sloppy, specially when playing fast. To the people learning this beat, it's easy, you can do it, just have patience.

I stick to the "old school" way of playing D-Beat (like Brian Roe of Discharge) and not hit the cymbals with the kick, but keep snare and cymbal straight. Specially when you move the whole thing to the tombs it sounds more interesting then just keep hitting the cymbals (or tombs for that matter) with the kick. But that's just my personal preference.

Keep it up.

(Sorry english is not my first lenguage.)
A good watch: on Southern Lord Records there is a drum cam of Nick from Baptists - good speed and very accurate.

Also I use the “cheater” method where I alternate my double kick, makes it easier at prolonged high tempo songs. I also like messing around and using double hits or rolls on the ride to add extra dynamic. Heavily inspired by the work of Paul from tragedy and my love for black metal. It’s a lot of fun to play around with that negative space with the cymbal hits while keeping the kick and snare going. Also really, really helps with coordination.

Love this. My favorite way to watch this video is to take a shot every time he says, "again."

Great breakdown of the D Beat. I also learned it years ago when we couldn't find a drummer (I'm originally a guitarist/bassist and play in bands at the moment) for the first powerviolence band I was in so I taught myself along with blasts. I actually saw this video shared in a punk/hardcore group and podcast i follow on FB. Cheers homie!

Also check out Dodsdomd if you haven't. Great Swedish band and I think you'd enjoy! Another one is Iron Cages (not the HC band but the one who only put out a demo and was recorded by someone in From Ashes Rise - great Tragedy/From Ashes Rise worship)

Great Content! D-beat style drumming just sounds so mean! I really enjoyed listening to those Swedish D-beat bands.

So if you're counting eighth notes (1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &) you're playing the Kick and RH (crash/ride) in unison on the 1, the 2&, and the 3&. The snare hits on the 2 and 4. Boom. Beautiful hard core drums. Nice vid.
