GETARIA, SPAIN - Welcome to Getaria, a small coastal town in Northern Spain, and the place where they invented grilling the whole turbot! Today we’re eating at the legendary Elkano, one of the greatest seafood restaurants in Europe, and dedicated to grilled turbot.

Elkano is a legendary seafood restaurant throughout Spain. The restaurant was originally started by Mr. Pedro, who is credited with being the first to grill an entire whole turbot. The restaurant is currently run by Mr. Aitor Arregui, the son of Pedro. They specialize in the ultra freshest and best quality seafood, prepared simply.
A few of my favorite dishes of the meal were the spider crab, deshelled and mixed with the head butter; Atlantic blue lobster with its roe; and the whole grilled turbot fish. Almost everything you’ll eat at Restaurant Elkano will be from the grill, with simple preparations to highlight the seafood without covering it up. Again, Elkano is yet another example of Spanish food - taking the best quality ingredients and simply preparing them.
All the food was delicious, but without a doubt the highlight was the whole grilled turbot - the fish that no one leaves without trying. Mr. Aitor brought it to our table and parts it out into each individual piece that has a different flavor and texture. He then proceeds to make a pil pil sauce on the fish plate from the fatty protein of the fish. It’s truly incredible. One of the greatest fish parting outs of the world!
