In the last year or so, Richard Hammond has really shown us just how passionate he is about the world of classic cars. And while he was having a day out at the Goodwood Revival, he took the time to discuss exactly why these cars of yesteryear tickle his fancy.

Anyone who lends Hammond a classic car, instantly increase the chances of it becoming rarer 👍🏻

The racing at Goodwood is HANDS-DOWN my favorite racing to watch. All of those classics, sliding around the track at the limit as they were meant to be driven….it’s just fantastic.

I love classic cars, and I love them for a simple reason: they just look FAR better than almost any modern cars.

"Winning is evolution at a cellular level" (Hammond, 2021) Love That!

And what Hammond has just done is prove that he is the best of the three presenters on The Grand Tour in under five minutes.

I turned 50 last year and for the last 5 years, I've owned a 1932 Morris Minor Two-Seater and absolutely love the old thing. I have no idea where my love for pre-war vintage cars comes from. Certainly not in the family. It should do a tad bit over 50mph but anything above about 45mph is not particularly comfortable for me or the machine, so I happily pootle along at 40-45mph on the back roads with the hood down and the wind in the hair.

Richard got it right at 1:30 the best art has some constraints. You can see it in the first season of Grand Tour it’s like they went crazy with freedom.

Went to the revival this year with my granddad, brother and dad. Best day out I’ve ever had ngl. Sat at the woodnote grandstand and the racing was immense

100% agree with Hammond! I was born in 2005 and love all cars, especially classic cars (pre 1985), the older the better!

Personally I love the stories of classic cars and the character of them! I also love the passion that went into making and designing them which you just don't see on cars today!👍

This is sort of the antidote to the "Why I sold my Ferrari" James May vid on this channel.

Wholly agree with everything he said, which is probably why I daily drive a car that’s more than twice as old as I am!

There’s something so joyous about seeing and experiencing something which so differently expresses and carries out it’s duties in how it goes about being a car, in contrast to today’s modern cars, that it makes all the heartache, mental anguish and bruised knuckles in keeping it going all the more worthwhile.

Arguably my favorite DriveTribe interview with one of the boys. The exact emotions Hammond is describing are what he, James, and Jeremy instilled in me when I was 15.

(some) Classic car racing at Goodwood is more enjoyable to witness than an F1 race. Shout out to those putting those big money machines through the paces at Goodwood.

All got a bit deep, but I agreed with every word.
What a cracking ambassador for classic car design, 👏 Mark.

I think Richard secretly left the house without Mindy checking his dress, had some "carcaine", topped that up with some bubbles and then gave a speech to a camera. And still we love it.

In my mind cars are a form of Art-Deco when designed correctly. This is characterised mainly by form following function and simplicity of form . More specifically for example the curves of a Jaguar D type. Those curves are simple (to the eye even though they are difficult to make) and both accommodate wheels/engine and help with aerodynamics.

I would never be able to put into words my passion for cars as well as Hammond

He doesn’t look out of place one bit dressed like that and that’s absolutely fantastic.

I agree Richard, I think it’s why I also love classic cars, and also classic movies. The constraints placed on each during their creation forced their creators to think harder, to create something special that pushed boundaries. And to think is to be human. The result is something that connects directly to our senses, and our humanity.
