A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.3 occurred today in Japan near Fukushima Prefecture.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the epicenter was in the sea at a depth of 60 kilometers.
The tremors were felt across much of eastern Japan, including Tokyo, where buildings shook violently.
The agency issued a tsunami warning for Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures.
The Tokyo Electric Power Company said about 2 million homes were left without electricity.
The Japanese Air Force sent planes south of Fukushima to collect information and assess damage.
There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injury.
The epicenter of today's quake was 89 kilometers from the epicenter of the 2011 earthquake, which triggered a tsunami that damaged several nuclear reactors in the area.
The 2011 quake had a magnitude of 9.1 and released about 500 times more energy than Wednesday's quake.
