Sir, thank you so much for this explanation. I was having so much trouble understanding why the formula given in my textbook WASN'T an integral, because surely, I thought, each of the infinitely many points on the ring would be attracting, and attracted to, the object at P. But by uniformity, the integral over mass is a constant.

If only they had tried to make this *clear*, as opposed to *simple*; as opposed to dumbing it down.
