This is the problem with the typical defense that people have for Sacha: “he’s just making fun of America, using Kazakhstan as a blank cultural slate”. Sure, he is making fun of America, in some aspects, but a large portion of the humor is just kicking Kazakhstan’s image down the drain and annoying Kazakhs. I know that Nazarbayev himself deserves to be mocked in every way, but what Sacha has done by flying to Washington and doing what he did at that exact time is only further destroying the look of an entire people, without any commentary or critique of American culture. He doesn’t care about the problems with American culture or any other culture, nor does he care about the history of Kazakhstan when Kazakhs were propagandized as uncivilized by the Russians (a sentiment that still continues and has grave effects today). He’s just trying to make his 4th grade humor jokes without any concern for the effects it has.

I heard he lied to the villagers in the beginning of the film saying it was a documentary about how they were trapped in poverty just to make fun of them and make millions off of it. Im sure hed say either a lie, he jad no idea, or that was part of the film and all a skit.
