Need to restore:
1. Prophylactic(sealants)
2. Repair
3. Fracture tooth
4. Congenital malformation
5. Improper positioning(diastemma)
6. Part of other treatment(bridge, denture)
7. Fracture restoration
8. defective margins of previous restoration
9. Gingival overhanging
10. Improper proximal contact
11. Poor esthetic(including flourosis)

Objectives:
1. Remove all defects(affected dentin can be left only in pulpal floor)
2. Protect pulp(varnish, liner, base..galvanic shock, thermal conductivity, chemicals from restorative materials)
3. Conservative preparation
4. No fracture of tooth.(Cusp capping)
5. No restoration displacement
6. Restore the esthetics
7. Should be functional

Definition: tooth preparation is defined as the mechanical alteration of a defective, injured or diseased tooth in order to best recieved a restorative material which will re-establish a healthy state for the tooth including esthetic correction, along with normal form and function.
