I think you have provided great advice here. I am a relative beginner having started drawing about 3 years ago. I am 66 years of age and up until the age of 62/63 believed I was hopeless and so it didn't take much to discourage me. But, I decided to have another go and this time I was determined to stick with it. I finally mastered the basics of perspective and that helped a lot. Getting the foundations in place meant I saw enough in my work to keep going. Over time I could actually see my work getting better and my confidence grew. Then lockdown happened and with nothing much else to do I just concentrated on drawing. Now I feel I have come a long way. I still have a lot to learn but I don't get discouraged when navigating the "ugly stage". As you said, trust the process; learn to employ tonal range; pause for reflection regularly and if you still don't like the finished work have another try. When I find myself in the ugly stage, it is usually because I do not enjoy the process enough and stop too soon. And sometimes I just give up on the particular illustration or on drawing that day and leave it to next day. I found out that it usually means that I am forcing myseelf to paint too hard.
