Is oatmeal bad for you? Let’s talk about it.

The small packets of flavored oatmeal contain a lot of sugar, and even though they may be marketed as healthy—they’re not.

But what about unsweetened oatmeal?

Here are three things you might not know about unsweetened oatmeal:
1. Certain studies show a significant improvement in blood sugar and cholesterol. However, the control in one of these studies is white bread. The study also only showed an improvement in blood sugar right after the meal.

Part of the study referring to cholesterol was only on consuming beta-glucan, which is an isolated compound in oatmeal. In a different study, the participants all had diabetes, and they didn’t see a change in their blood glucose levels.

2. Oats contain a type of gluten called avenin. This protein has been known to increase cytokines.

3. Oat products have often been treated with glyphosate. The World Health Organization classifies glyphosate as a carcinogen.

It may be beneficial to skip breakfast altogether and give intermittent fasting a try. If you do consume breakfast, eggs would be a healthier choice than oatmeal.

I stopped eating foods, drinking water and breathing air because it's toxic. My doctor says I am incredibly healthy.

It seems we can't eat anything anymore at this point. Just boring old veggies I guess

I did think twice about eating oatmeal. That's why I had two bowls. It was delicious.

I’ve eaten oatmeal since 13 or 14. I’m 49 now. No health issues and all the labs work come back great. I’m fit and healthy. I’ve eaten Quaker Oates every single day, even camping, or traveling, oatmeal has been part of my breakfast for decades. My grandmother who passed at 94 ate it every day since a child. She worked till she was 80. So I guess oatmeal should be skipped? Nope. I’m not changing up a thing. Most people around me at my age I know, suffer from may health related issues. In the last 3 yrs, I have switched to Red Mill brand. Much better than Quaker.

My mom’s friend he’s been gone for about 20 years now. He lived to 103 and he ate oatmeal every meal. I don’t know how he could’ve done that but he swore by eating oatmeal that it was so healthy for you and he was a healthy little old guy.

I'm totally with this guy. I am a doctor as well (doctor of love) so I know what I'm talking about. I eat mostly glass and scrap metal which is good for the environment and gives me the mineral content I need. The bowel movements are brutal but it's totally worth it.

I eat organic gluten free oats for brunch with flaxseed, chia seeds, maca root, blueberries, sunflower and pumpkin seeds and walnuts. It's my favourite meal of the day and keeps me full until my 2nd meal around 5pm. It' works for me. I suppose if you look hard enough, you'll find a problem with anything. Life's way too short.

I've been eating oatmeal my whole life. About 10 years ago, my cholesterol was borderline and my doctor wanted to put me on medication but I decided to go back to the oatmeal since my childhood family physician told me that oat fiber is the best thing for cholesterol. Because of a family history of heart disease, I have a physical every year and have everything thoroughly tested. I'm 52 with the cholesterol of a healthy 38 year old. I'm going to continue with what has worked.

I always thought it was the vegetarian diet that killed both my grandparents, but now I know it was the oatmeal. Like a fool I started eating oatmeal again after not eating it for 20 years because of those high carbs. Funny thing when I started eating oatmeal again, all my prostate problem that were killing me went away completely. Then I remembered that my grandparents were both a hundred years old when they died.

As someone who runs 40-50 miles a week I consume oatmeal regularly and I have no plan on stopping. Works really well for me.

3 days a week I eat oatmeal. I put some walnuts, cinnamon, chia, flax and a teaspoon of raw honey in it. I feel great. It's the only grain I eat.

I always eat 2 or 3 soft boiled eggs, unsweetened goats milk yogurt, w fresh blackberries and blueberries, a very small bowl of unsweetened steel cut oats w ground flaxseed, hemphearts, and ground sunflower lecithin...I follow up with an hour of walking up and down hills and flights of stairs...I feel awesome and on no medication. I'm 64, soon to be 65. Movement is medicine.

Almost 2 years ago I switched out my morning bowl of frosted mini wheat for 1 cup of plain instant oatmeal with frozen blueberries for sweetness. Went from 203 to 180. I changed nothing else in my diet. Im 52 now. Cholesterol went down like crazy too. I'm staying with my oatmeal for life

My grandma is 99 years old, she eats oatmeal everyday, usually twice a day. So oatmeal might not be perfect, but eating it twice a day for several decades straight hasn't seemed to slow granny down, so I'm going to go ahead and say it's probably fine.

Half the “experts” claim oatmeal is ‘bad’ and the other half claim it is ‘good’…so I guess we’ll be okay if we eat it only every other day? Makes as much sense as anything else I’ve heard.
