Mouth Stuck Open! TMJ Dislocation Treatment (Open Lockjaw)

The temporomandibular jaw joint or TMJ allows the mouth to both open and close. However, there are rare times when the mouth becomes locked in the open position due to a TMJ dislocation.

In order to reduce this dislocation back into normal position, the jaw must be forced downwards and back. However, this downward movement is not easy to accomplish because of the masseter muscle which acts to keep pulling the jaw upward, resisting the downward movement that is required.

My jaw got locked open for 10 Days and doctors didn’t know why, then went to a tmj specialist at ucla for him to fix it in a couple of seconds! I now can put it back my self!

Got 3 attack in last 20 years....Very unusal condition and very painful... mostly occurs in winters for me. All 3 times managed myself but it is too difficult to manage. This video is very helpful...avoid extra force to minimize tear down of musles.
Use Hot cloth compression to releax the muscles at first stage (my personal experience) and then lean neck to forward downward, and if it doesn't help you then try this video method with precautions or Visit any dentist as soon as possible to reduce the risk of being Damaged. Dont panic.

I am having this problem for past 12 years. I cannot open my mouth wide open because If I do that my Jaws get locked open for couple of seconds like by yawning. And what happened today is very disturbing. my jaw locked open once when i yawned. i had just woken up and bam, now my mouth was stuck open. i was able to undo it myself tho. took me a couple minutes but it wasnt like i needed a doctor to do it for me. just common sense.
