The Gestalt Principles | Basics for Beginners

The Gestalt Principles are a series of hypothesis defined by German Psychologists in the 1920s. They state that 'the whole is something else than the sum of it's parts' and break down how relationships between design elements are formed and interpreted by the human mind.

My therapist recommended "Gestalt Therapy", and said I should research it before our next session. Even though this video is about design, it actually cleared up a lot of confusion I had about gestalt therapy. Essentially, I tend to think of myself in terms of individual, non-unique traits, and struggle to see how I'm unique as an individual if each of my traits can be fulfilled by other people. It makes a whole lot more sense why my therapist would recommend gestalt therapy after learning about how gestalt theory applies to design.

Brilliant video. I use GESTALT as part of Coaching young people to be successful in their careers by seeing "The Big Picture" in workplace situations. What's great about your video is people generally are unaware of the forces impacting there behaviour in meetings etc, they just don't see them! Your video is in effect an Analogy because you reveal the hidden psychological "Forces" or more accurately "Subconscious Thought paths" that influence our perception of what we see. Our minds take the raw visual inputs and construct "The Big Picture". YOUR EFFORTS are much appreciated by an audience beyond designers!
