Insta360 One R 1 Inch Mod Review: Worth Buying?

The Insta360 One R 1 Inch Mod is the most advanced lens available for the Insta360 One R action camera. It allows you to shoot much higher quality video and photos compared to other cameras of a similar size.

For this 1 Inch Mod review I shot plenty of footage in various locations using various frame rate modes. The maximum resolution of the camera is 5.3K but the camera can also shoot in 4K at 60fps and 2.7K at 120fps.

Thanks for your review.i always like your straightforward approach which acknowledges that different users have requirements that vary from shoot to shoot. I already own the Insta360 Evo so can't justify spending more on one of these, but if I were in the market now I'd be very tempted. I agree the main downside is swapping lenses when you're out shooting. Most of my work is landscape around my home in the Scottish Highlands so I'm usually using Nordic walking poles which can make it awkward getting gear sorted and might put me off the One R. But if I were not an arthritic oldie and didn't need the 3D functions of the Evo I'd say go for it.

Looks like great footage! I saw a lot of reviews months ago that complained the 1 inch lens would not focus well on anything within a meter or so. Did you have any problems with this, or do you know if this was perhaps fixed with software updates?

I bought the Insta360 1" Version expecting to see a significant upgrade over my other action cameras. The image quality is not distinguishable. Maybe I was expecting too much, having being spoilt by the quality from the 1" sensor in my Sony RX10 III & IV. I am going to return it.
I think I'm going to find a way to use a run of the mill Point & Shoot 1" sensor camera like the Panasonic AZ200 or Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 as an action camera instead of messing around with these tiny cameras that you have to use an array of attachments to make them work.

Great review! Their stabilization needs a lot of work. Even in the slow-no footage it’s bouncing too much. Image quality, color science, and low light performance are fantastic.

Hi, great stuff! I’m not sure if you can help me.

3 questions on things I’ve read on Insta360 1 inch:

1) max record time of 28-29mins. Does that improve if using an external battery pack?

2) When using external battery packs, you need to press the ON/OFF every 10mins? Means, I can’t leave it alone to record a 2 hr footage?

3) Are there any recording gaps when shooting longer videos? I.e. the cam saves the video into smaller blocks of 30mins and are there any gaps between those files?

Usage will mainly for my drumming footage for concerts.
