FILM DESCRIPTION:
A woman realizes that friends can be lovers, but now has to convince the friend in question in this romantic comedy. Michael O'Neal (Dermot Mulroney) and Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) were romantically involved in college, and after breaking up, they have managed to remain close friends. For years, Julianne and Michael have had a pledge that if both were single when they turned 28, they would get married. Shortly before her 28th birthday, Julianne is lamenting the sad state of her love life when she gets a call from Michael, who announces that he has important news. Julianne is convinced that Michael is going to ask her to marry him, and she is crestfallen when he announces that he's engaged to Kimmy Wallace (Cameron Diaz). Kimmy seems like the perfect woman for Michael; she's sweet, pretty, bright, and adores Michael, and her wealthy family is just as fond of him as she is. But now that Julianne has realized how much she loves Michael, she's not about to give him up without a fight -- and isn't afraid to fight dirty. Julianne's uneasy ally in the battle for Michael's affections is her friend and editor George Downes (Rupert Everett), a cheerfully out-of-the-closet homosexual who is not prepared when Julianne asks him to pose as her boyfriend.

I wish they extended it a minute more to show when he sings to her while they dance and a tear rolls down her cheek, knowing he's right there and she can't have him. It's so powerful ughhh goosebumps, my fav scene

I love the under the bridge symbolism. the sun beaming was the moment you knew that the chance for jiliann to say I love you already passed by.

This movie makes me infuriated and also so happy. Right here in this moment it's clear he has feelings for her.

This part gets me every time! Even though she had several opportunities to tell him, THIS was the perfect moment to say she's in love with him, especially since it seems like he had an inkling that she felt that way. Looks like he even had doubts about his fiance too. This is sad and beautiful.

I’ve watched a lot of movies and this is one of the best scenes ever. He was ready for her to say “I love you” and gave her the moment he’s looking at her straight in the eyes, just waiting and she just couldn’t do it and lets the moment just pass by. When she couldn’t do it, he looks away and looks down in sadness/disappointment.
Everything about this scene is beautiful and heartbreaking. From the music to the symbolism of being under the bridge and the sun shining when she realizes she messed up

All these years later, since 1997, I still get goosebumps (it's now fall 2013) when I drive under a highway underpass and look up thru my car sunroof and see the bottom of the highway from below as the sun fades then shines....I ALWAYS think, "TELL SOMEONE YOU LOVE THEM - before the moment passes you by". Always a moment when I smile and wish life had a happy ending like in the movies.

Always loved this part when at 1:52 it was like a light went off and there was a moment of clarity I still love you.. This hits at home, I had a moment like that.

I think she doesn't say it because albeit she loved him, she wasn't sure she could give him what Kim would. She was a complicated person, self-absorbed and a bit selfish. She knows that once she says it, everything will change. If they try again and fail, she will definitely lose him from her life.
So she remains quiet.

I think Michael has feelings for Julianne, you can see that almost the entire movie; however, he had made a decision already, he's really involved and committed in his relationship with Kimmy, and had already accepted that Julianne and him were not compatible on a romantic way.

They really don’t make movies like this these days. I loved this movie mainly because of my massive crush on Cameron Diaz, but looking back now, I realized how good of a movie this really was. The dialogue, the acting, the storyline and plot and most of all the music. They were all fantastic

P.J. Hogan did this scene with one take, saying the moment was just perfect and that coming out from the under the bridge would say it all. And it truly does, especially with the music.

He loved her, but he already committed to a wedding. The moment just passed them by. He was waiting for her to say it.

Heartbreaking. But this was a great movie.

This scene hits different when u experienced it… there was a moment when I knew I loved her but was afraid to say it… now she’s not even in my life anymore but still I miss her deeply.
