CBSE Class 10 Science Chapter 2 - Acids Bases and Salts - Water of Crystallization
Are crystals of salts really dry? Lets find out the answer of this question by performing an activity in which we will heat the copper sulfate crystals. We will find out that on heating the crystals they became from blue colored crystals to colorless and water vapors are released. When we add the water to the dried crystal it will again become the blue colored solution. Hence copper sulfate had the water molecules which are called as the Water of Crystallization.
Water of Crystallization - It is the fixed number of water molecules in one formula unit of a salt. Copper Sulfate has the 5 molecules of water
Gypsum is the another salt which has the water of crystallization and has 2 water molecules in its formula. When it is heated at 373 kelvin it will lose its water molecules to form Plaster of Paris which used for different purposes.
