I was kinda disappointed with Solitaire, and I think it's because I projected waaaay too much on the characters in other iterations, I was disappointed when they did things I didn't like or expect. Which is totally a me problem. But still haha

I am sooo baffled that anyone would list The Bear and the Nightingale as Magical Realism. It most definitely is not that and I think listing it as that is a weird choice. But this is also why I don't go off GR shelves. I always go to check either the author or a bookstore page or like Amazon - basically anything where I know it's got a better chance of a correct listing. The reason why is it happens all the time that people list Adult fantasy series by women authors as YA when they're not or MG series as YA (or vice versa) on GR quite a lot. Out of curiosity, do you think if you had went into it not thinking it was Magical Realism that you might've enjoyed it more?

I feel exactly the same way about Solitaire. Alice Oseman is my favourite author. I can't describe in one comment how much their books mean to me. I have a fully dedicated shelf to all of Oseman's work but I don't even own solitaire anymore because I hate it. What I will say is that Alice Oseman recognises this themselves too and she actually edited the story and it's republished. I one day want to pick up a new copy to see what those changes are. Also Alice was really young when she wrote that book and I'm so glad to see that in Heartstopper both Charlie and Tori their mental health is handles SO much better and in all their other books as well. Maybe even some of the best mental health rep in any book ever is in Alice Oseman's other work so we love to see that development at least
