RIMPAC SINKEX: Malaysian Corvette KD LEKIR Fires Exocet Missile

A Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) corvette, KD LEKIR, took part in a Sinking Exercise (SINKEX) during the sea phase of RIMPAC 2022 on July 12, 2022. The corvette, among other units, struck a decommissioned corvette with an Exocet MM40 Block 2 anti-ship missile.

For this SINKEX, the target was the former USS Rodney M. Davis, a Oliver Hazard Perry (OHP) class frigate.

According to the Royal Malaysian Navy, the event marked the first time a RMN ship conducted a missile firing outside of Malaysian waters.

According to the U.S. Navy, Units from Australia, Canada, and the U.S. also participated in the SINKEX to gain proficiency in tactics, targeting and live firing against a surface target at sea.

Both are great anti-ship weapons. Every real combatant needs to have at least 4 - 8 anti-ship missiles onboard.

The affordable OPH class Frigates were arguably one the most cost effective ships USN ever built. The integrated ASW sensor suite was of course one of the force-multipliers of the package. And for the relatively small size, they were impressive in overall survivability. No doubt USN wanted to just get rid of them unilaterally, create a massive gap in capabilites and deterrence, then push Congress to spend $10s of Billions in acquiring very cool dazzling Light Combat Vessel replacements which were half as dependable and capable. It's amazing how long USN has operated without a single Frigate.

Malaysia needs more modern drones than they need expensive and outdated Naval vessels. I feel the current course the RMN is plotting is too expensive and outdated given what has happened in Ukraine especially around Snake Island where the Bayraktars have been punishing smaller RUS Naval vessels and guiding long range anti ship missiles to target like the one that sank the Moskva.

The single arm launcher which could fire Standards (Anti-aircraft) and Harpoons (Anti-ship) was great. The forerunner of VLS systems which can carry and fire a variety of missiles, depending on the mission.

And to think that some navies in the S.E.A region are laughing at the presence of KD Lekir at RIMPAC. After that lethal Exocet hit, it shows that it is still a capable corvette in the hands of capable crews. Who's laughing now?
