I haven't driven my M5 for years, so I got it road-ready and took it for a drive. It still feels nuts today - what the hell was it like in 1986?

I revisit this every now and then. It's bitter sweet for me, the end always gets me. I owned quite a few e28's (when they were peanuts) including a very rare Hartge 3.4, based on the 528i which my mother-in-law scrapped (won't go there). It preceded both the original M535i and M5 and had an LSD. I never owned the M5. Glorious. I'm slightly younger than Chris, but I can still remember how unbelievable the original M5 was. A trailblazer. A whole new sector. A saloon car like this was unheard of, and before the skirts and chins appeared they were the original sleeper. The calculated, sinister hooligan. I can't begin to explain what an impact this four door super taxi made on me. Don't sell it mate, she's a well used beauty. Fantastic.

Along with Citroen 2cv and Ferrari FF, I'd say the episodes where he talks about his own cars are the best, they just offer a really personal look into his love for cars, and there's just extra care put into the filming. Brilliant.

This car is better than 90% of the cars made today

My dad had one in the 87-88 when I was 6 or7. I used to go sit in front of it for hours and hours just watching the beauty of it. It caught my imagination as well and I LOVED the design, the curves, the wheels the color. That car was my first love. Just gorgeous...

Superbly built and engineered BMW. This was an era when BMW and Merc were head and shoulders above anything else.

This is truly masterpiece. No need sensors no computers, just enjoy cruise. This whole era was the best in design and engineering. These models gave the glory of Bmw. Wish I could afford this piece of history. The ultimate driving machine.

Dear lovely BMW E28, first time I saw you in 1990, you remained in my heart forever. Love you. Love can touch just one time and last for a lifetime.

Chris, I keep coming back to this video. Its intoxicating. A real hero machine which I hope you never sell, I'm not sure i'll ever be at the right time or mindset to buy one but one of my all time favourites, if I ever did buy one I'm pretty sure it would be a keeper.

My dad became a cool person in my eyes when he took me for a ride in this same M5. I was 12 like you Chris. I still love my dad since that day 30 years ago.

This is the exact car that caught my attention. My family owned a 1987 BMW 535i. When i turned 16 my dad tossed me the keys on my birthday and told me it was mine. I loved that car till it was put to pasture at 360k miles. Amazing car and the sound it makes when the engine get wound up is amazing. I replaced it with my 318ti and am still in love (80s chassis~, 90s body). Great video!

My all time favorite car. My uncle had this M5 20 years ago when I was still a young chap. He would every now and then drop me at school. The memories are priceless

Me either. My dad bought the e32 750iL with the new V12 back in 1992. Babied it for years until i turned 17 and then i totaled it going 80 around a corner on mountain roads. That moment i stepped into that drivers seat it changed my outlook on BMW's forever. I used to think BMW was just an old man car like Porsche or Bentley or Benz.
Patiently waiting until i can own my dream car, either an e46 M3 or an e30 M3.

I had a black E28 M535i with a dog-leg box, why on earth did I sell it?!

The 80's was BMW's greatest era. I don't think they will ever get back to matching it. A few cars along the way have been special, like the E46 M3 and the E39 M5. But as an era overall...the 80's were perfection!!
