It’s 1 am and I’m watching a guy make a whistle out of a tree that isn’t even native in the place I live in, god I love the internet.

My dad used to make these for me. He recently was diagnosed with early onset dementia. As I move into adulthood, I have to remind myself of special moments like these, because I know that he won’t. Please spend some time with your dad. He’s probably a really cool guy with a lot of things to say, so let him. OP, thank you for sharing a memory.

Just to say this works much better in spring/early summer. When there is more sap in the tree and the bark is softer.

First time I seen this...very very cool. I look forward to showing the kids!

In my neck of the woods, my daddy taught me how to make hickory whistles. You had to do it early in the spring and I usually cut me several little limbs so I could make enough to last all summer. I usually lost a few out of my pocket when riding my bike.

Reminds me of an old story I loved as a child. The Tinker's Flute. Passed it on to my kids and they have to theirs. At the end of the story he sticks the flute in the bank of the brook he was playing by and a willow tree grew from it. Great old story🙂

My dad used to make these for all 8 of us kids every spring. That was always a very loud week or so before all us children broke or lost our whistles lol

My dad taught me to make those when I was just a little girl. So fun to remember things like that

I always just used a blade of grass between my thumbs. It's surprisingly loud. But this is an awesome little trick for sure.🎉🎉🎉

Nice! Although one correction. Flutes and whistles have fipples not reeds. Its the part the switches the wind in and out through different inner and outter pressure making the pitch. Reeds are pieces of "flappy" material that vibrate making the pitch. The difference? Reeds sound an octave lower in this type of design. Difference between a whistle and a bird caller. But awesome design and technique!!!

If you cut the stick entirely behind the fipple (the little notch in the bark), you can make this into a slide whistle of sorts -- as long as the inside of the bark stays wet, you can adjust the pitch by sliding the stick into and out of the bark cylinder, and actually play tunes. Alternatively, you can remove the stick entirely past the fipple, and drill finger holes in the bark to play it like a penny whistle (play gently, the bark tube will collapse if you squeeze too hard).

When I was a kid (1960s) every boy learned to make these minutes after getting his first pocket knife (typically age 7 or 8).

I remember this from our church's girl's camp. No one believed it could actually be done lol, and they had all thought vine maple was willow smh. I found a good piece of actual willow, and about 15 minutes later 12 year old me was annoying everyone.

This brought back a long-forgotten memory and a tear to my eye.
My dad taught us once how to do this! I don't recall it working well, but I'm inspired to try it again, around 55 years later ❤️

My alternative is just whistling, but I know that's not quite easy for everyone (especially a whistle like that.) This is still a very cool tool I'd carry around. Excellent bushcraft, my dude!

40 years from now i will impress my grandkids with this sitting around a fire.
I will remember this.

This brings back memories from my teenage years. I remember one of my friend making those whistles out of a willow. And from there he evolved it into a cigarette holder as a joke, but somewhat effective way to keep our hands and clothes free of smoke smell
