Oceanographer Dr. Vicki Ferrini, marine biologist Dr. Helen Scales, and explorer Victor Vescovo join Brian Greene for a journey to Earth’s final frontier where for the first time we are discovering what lies beneath the oceans.

This program is part of the Big Ideas series, supported by the John Templeton Foundation.

Participants:
Dr. Vicki Ferrini, Oceanographer
Dr. Helen Scales, Marine Biologist
Victor Vescovo, Explorer

Moderator:
Brian Greene

All this should be in every classroom. A child’s brain is a terrible thing to waste.

Thanks for this discussion. We are in a great time when we are looking up with JWST and looking down with deep ocean exploration.

Is being an explorer just another word for being very rich and traveling to places?

In the sky we have rivers, and Prof. Vicky now says we have rivers on the ocean floor.

World of wonder.

Wonder why we haven't heard more about Vicki, Hellen and Victor's research and findings in main stream news?? These people and their research are crucial. Victor needs more funding to get his research teams a couple more ultra deep dive subs...and for research. This is as important as the space race. Hope they have more of their research on, very interesting.

Climbing mountains is an expensive sport. I don't think astronauts get paid heaps and heaps of money and yet this guy has $50, 000, 000 initially to build his submersible to nicely share with the world. Incredible.

I guess the question is - "Will humans destroy the ocean before we find anything useful." And it's probably a good thing we haven't explored it much. It may be the only place we have left to survive once the surface is unhabitable. There may be some lost ancient civilizations at the bottom of the ocean that have done just that. Our technologies at this time can't properly map the ocean floor anyway.
