Over the past few years it has become popular to attack the Christopher Columbus myth and even push to rename the holiday Indigenous Peoples Day. Christopher Columbus’s journey to the new world was filled with dark moments, but the current stories may contain more lies than facts. Michael Knowles debunks some of the most sensational details of the current revisionist history about Columbus and explains what really happened. Columbus is celebrated in Latin American countries as well. He was a respected explorer. He was not a colonist.

When I was young, we were taken to an exhibit of the exact replicas of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Normally, small children are impressed with how large everything is because children are quite small by comparison. What impressed me was how tiny those ships were and how remarkable it was that they managed to sail across an entire ocean in them. It required a set, I assure you. Columbus was not a villain, and anything that might have resulted inadvertently--like smallpox--he can hardly be vilified for. Show us any group of people who've lived on this planet and you'll find some atrocity associated with them, accidental or deliberate. We're human, it happens.

You know, I can't stand when people complain about the use of the word "discovered". 1) We all know people were here before him, 2) Things can be discovered more than once. All you need is a person or people to learn something they didn't know. Columbus discovered the Americas existed, and also discovered people were living there. This was news to the rest of the world, which is why he is credited with discovering it's existence. *No one is claiming he was the first person ever, to find and step foot here.*

Thank you Michael Knowles in reminding me where I came from (I'm Hispanic with strong native American blood) my son was born on Columbus day and I named him Christopher for that reason. It does sadden me to see so much of an attempt to rewrite our history.
