Must of been the first time Santa Cruz experienced harsh waves. Surly the wharf being built out of wood in 1914 had nothing to do with it.

Why would they be working on the wharf during a dangerous surf warning?

I am very happy to see the timestamp on future radar simulation. I suggested that a few weeks back, I would imagine many folks suggested it as well. Nice job Zoe, you are settling in real well, appreciate your hard work.

That's so weird. Buildings like that should be inspected regularly, why no one from the city is responsible for that?

That is a very dangerous spot to surf at.

According to all the comments this wharf was known to be old and unsafe for over 5 years.

So the wharf was already damaged and slated for demolition put the guy blamed it on climate change

Um. The second wharf they showed damaged from last year was the Capitola Wharf. These are two different wharfs, news producers! Nice reporting... 🙄

surfers should be fined leaving their broken boards in the water.

I'd ask how many tons of seals were sheltering on the supports below that portion of the pier? I wonder if the Construction Engineers included the weight, of this popular under the pier tourist show of giant aquatic mammals, in their safety calculations?

Must be some silly California regulation that prohibits the cleaning of the pilings that have way too much growth and subsequent drag and wave loading that led to this accident.

The question will be now, how long before more of this pier structure, or could the rest of this pier Stucture fall into the sea too?

Because of more storms and high waves, in the next few days or weeks, or from future storm weather and raising sea conditions, in the next few years too?

Or will US Government Federal and State civil and structural engineers, will say the rest of the pier has to be taken down on safety grounds.

Because the pier structure, has become just too weak and cannot stand up, to future storms or powerful high waves over 30 feet or higher too?

Along with the cost of reinforcing the pier structure, is just too expensive, demolition is the only choice!

infrastructure should be a basic government function, not an after thought

Reminds me of the words in the Gospel of Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring . . . Take care, look to Jesus
